Bantugang Sugbuanon- The Art and Artists of Cebu (A Collector's Guide to the Best of Cebuano Art)

"To the artists of Cebu; for your undying spirit and willingness to thrive"

Bantugang Sugbuanon (Renowned Cebuano), is the 14th volume of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Cultural Heritage Series under the directorship of Director - General Amb. Jose Maria Cariño, who grew up in Barcelona but plans to retire and spend the rest of his remaining life in Cebu- a city he fell in love with since his twenties.

Art as Cebuano emerges in between the concerns to define art and to define the Cebuano. There are questions of its necessity or its possibility. To contemplate the idea of art as Cebuano is to re-examine first the concept of art as Filipino. Writings on Philippine art and its canon have brought greater attention and interest in art produced in this part of the world. Filipino art historians and critics have painstakingly contended with the Euro-American framework that defined Philippine art using colonial perspectives, western categories and standards.

The efforts produced important discourses that seriously considered contextual conditions in the Philippines, thereby creating a history and theory of art that comes close to being a Filipino.  Philippine art has gained a measure of confidence that compels its presence in the discursive consciousness of contemporary art practice.

Art as a manifestation of Filipino identity is a concern that continues to incite new perspectives. Philippine visual art is now fraught with criticism for its lack of inclusive understanding of peripheral cultures outside the National Capital. This book hopes to enrich such a concern by re-imagining Philippine art from diverse cultural contexts, including the cultural and social conditions of artists in Cebu.

In the past years, art and cultural institutions have increasingly become conscious of the need to recalibrate art programs to include artists from the regions.  This inclusivity, however, needs to be anchored on a more concrete and profound understanding of regional art

More than just a requirement to e-vince inclusive programming, regional artists should be listened to with sincerity.  This book intends to introduce to more people the story of Cebuano art through the lives of its artists. It hopes to allow people to see the widening horizons of Philippine art if seen through an expansive lens that could include the regions". (Jay Nathan Jore, A. Selanova, P. Sinajonon, S. Takemura)
