Cebuano Artist Painting Collection- Leodito Rosales Bongo III

One of the youngest emerging artists making waves both locally and internationally is a 20 year old native of Danao City, who is currently living in Carmen, Cebu. His name is Leodito Rosales Bongo III.  

Currently a Fine Arts student of the University of the Philippines Cebu, he was also a  personal student of Master Cubist Celso Duazo Pepito since 2020. He  garnered several local and international awards for his art and was the champion of the 7th World Youth Art Festival 2020 in South Korea. He started creating art when he was in grade 3 but did not take it seriously until he was 16. 
 
His journey in pursuing his passion for creating art was not easy - with initial opposition from his parents.  He started losing hope because no one believed in him. But God sent him two angels in the person of Sir Paul Llideau and Celso Pepito who started to mentor him and changed his life for good.  He was greatly inspired by these people who prodded him to pursue his dream and guided him to the right artistic direction.
 
In August 2022, he became the newest and youngest member of CAI, Cebu Artist Inc., a  select group of renowned mid-career and established  Cebuano artists whose roster includes Jun Impas, Adeste Deguilmo, Celso Pepito, Sonia Yrastorza, Tony Vidal, Lida Aguilar, John Dinglasa, Jess Dinglasa among others. For now, his simple hope and prayer is that people will recognize and appreciate his art.  

The 18"x24" oil on canvas painting above is entitled Lingin Linaw- this is his first exhibit painting  as newest member of CAI.

Malingin Linaw is a sitio of Barangay Togonon, a far flung Barangay of Danao City. The place is very memorable to his family especially his mother because it is where they used to swim with their cousins after herding cows and goats.  Sto. Nino is the patron of the said Barangay.

"I put Sto. Nino above the rock looking in the water because I believe that nature is the gift from God but most of all I am a devotee of Sr. Sto. Niño", he said.

Rodolfo S. Cornejo on Stamp

Rodolfo S. Cornejo is the first Filipino composer who received an honory degree from a government recognized music school in the United States . He is also remarkable for his pianistic and compositional know-how by improvising a piano composition at the spur of the moment.   He was born on 15 May 1909 in Singalong, Manila . At the age of six, he had his formal piano lessons. After 2 years, he played fourteen pieces and six encores for his recital. In that same year, he became the organist of the Pasay Catholic Church when they moved in. When he was ten, he composed a piano piece entitled, "Glissando Waltz". Cesar Castillo was born and raised in Cebu City . Though he had shown interest in arts, he ended up taking Mechanical Engineering course in the University of the Visayas in 1986 just to fulfill the request of his parents. After graduation, he worked as a quality controller in the glass plant department of San Miguel Corporation , Cebu branch situated in Mandaue City   Though busy with his works, he always found time to develop his artistic skills, turning his free time into opportunities for learning.    As his artistic quest evolved, he started to find self-confidence in every painting he created thus giving him the privilege to slowly expose his art to Cebu's art patron and enthusiast. Cebuano Artists Painting Collection- Billy Pomida

Born in the island of Samar in the Philippines on July 11, 1963, Billy Pomida started the rudiments of drawing at a young age which inspired him to take up Fine Arts in college at the University of the East in Manila .    In 1986, he worked as a graphic designer for a government research institution before devoting to full-time painting in 2001. Manuel H. Bernabe (1890-1960) “King of Balagtasan ” in Spanish was a poet, linguist and politician, Manuel Bernabe was born on February 17, 1890 to Timoteo Bernabe and Emilia Hernandez of Paranaque, Rizal .   At the age of 10, he already started writing verses. He studied at the Ateneo de Manila where he finished his Bachelor of Arts degree with high academic standing in 1907, and then took up law at the University of Santo Tomas , but not able to took up the bar exams. In 1910, Manuel’s first poem was published in the Renacimento Filipino.   In 1912, he translated Virgil’s Aenid from Latin to Spanish. In 1913, he received an award for his poems: “Himno al Sagado Corazon de Jesus (Hymn to the Sacred Heart of Jesus ), “El Zapote,” and “Espana a Filipinas”.   In 1912, he joined the staff of La Democracia and in 1918, of La Vanguardia of the Roces Publications . Vicente F. Fabell a (1891-1959). Educator, economist, civic leader and the first Filipino certified public accountant . He was the founder of Jose Rizal College .  He was born on May 7, 1891 in Pagsanjan , Laguna , the third of six children of Juan Fabella, who served as mayor of Pagsanjan during the Spanish and American regimes, and Damiana Fernandez.    He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Philippines in 1912 and then continued his studies in the United States, obtaining concurrent degrees of bachelor of philosophy from the University of Chicago and diploma in commerce from Northwestern University in 1915. That same year, he became a certified public accountant in the state of Wisconsin .   In 1916, upon his return to the Philippines, he became a professional lecturer in accounting and auditing at the University of the Philippines .
