Image
FRUITS OF MY BOROBUDUR, INDONESIA JOURNEY. The privileged to be invited to join the EXPRESSION exhibit at Limanjawi Art House in Borobudur, Indonesia was one great opportunity for me to learn and appreciate the arts and culture of the Indonesian people. But being in Borobudur for a week has given me more reasons to be steadfast in my creative journey as art in this area is more alive, most artists has their own studio , embracing the contemporary mode of expression as they  actively create their art. The warmthness and great hospitality of our Indonesian counterparts have even made our stay more precious and enriching. But what really made this trip more fruitful was transforming my time into moments of productivity through SKETCHING . From Cebu , to Manila , to Kuala Lumpur , to Yogjakarta to Borobudur and back, sketching has always been a part of my passion to document this trip. I was happy that our layovers in KLIA2 has given me more time to create. It was indeed another...

Cebuano Artists Painting Collection- Wenceslao Cuevas

Image
Wenceslao "Tito" Cuevas (Sep 2, 1938 –Mar 19, 2012)  is considered as the father of Cebuano abstract expressionism .  In the 70's, after visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York , he was inspired by the works of Franz Kline and Mark Rothko .  He started doing his style of abstract expressionism and prodded his Cebuano contemporaries to cut back painting in the realist - impressionist manner and create something different. This was one of the reasons why Celso Pepito was inspired to try cubism. He also dabbled on abstract expressionism as a Fine Arts student and even made it his thesis in UP Cebu .  Pepito considers Cuevas  as the Father of Modern Cebuano Art - by modern he meant non- traditional painting. During this time, Cebu was not ready for abstract expressionism and his paintings were generally disliked and bought only by a few select group of unconventional collectors.   Today, his paintings are well sought after both locally and i...

Edgar B. Mojares was a Cebu -based artist who studied art at Cebu's UPCC Fine Arts Program in 1975. Born to public school teachers from Polanco , Zamboanga del Norte , he is the brother of National Artist in Literature, Resil B. Mojares . The late Mojares was a reclusive painter who had several group art exhibits but never had a one man show. The online exhibit at CAI gallery was his first. His works spans fifteen years, roughly running between the late 70s to early 90s. Pencil sketch, 1990 He is well regarded as the leading proponent of Cebuano synthetic collage cubism in the 70's with Tito Cuevas in abstract expressionism . These two turned down pecuniary gains to lead Cebu to novel art forms which were not well received during their time, as buyers and collectors where more inclined to buy realist paintings. Radel Paredes aptly stated, "the late Mojares took up Picasso's collage but used basket weave, coco fiber and other organic materials more telling of local...
