Marvin Chito Natural is a highly acclaimed, self-taught contemporary Filipino visual artist who stands out as a prominent modern voice in Philippine social realism. Born in 1977 in Toledo City, Cebu, Natural uses art as his vocabulary to actively critique the political, cultural, and socio-economic struggles of the regular Filipino.


The Visionary from Toledo

Natural's trajectory is uniquely compelling because he did not take the traditional academic path. Armed only with natural childhood inclination and rigorous self-discipline, he mastered oil painting techniques by sharpening his objective observation. Rather than adhering to mainstream aesthetic demands, he believes that true art operates without obligation, maintaining that "There is no 'must' in art. Art must be free." Outside of his studio hours, he gives back to his local community by managing historical preservation as the full-time curator of the Museo de Toledo in Cebu.


Artistic Technique and Social Realism


Natural works predominantly in oil on canvas. He manipulates illumination and contrast to depict the profound psychological depth of his human subjects. Rather than providing simple aesthetic pleasantry, his canvas functions as a social mirror. His imagery often highlights themes of: Vulnerability & Helplessness: Portraying ordinary citizens exposed to massive systemic issues. Aggressors vs. Victims: Capturing the intricate friction within societal power imbalances. Deterioration & Regret: Using metaphors like rusted metal or complex text overlays to represent historical repetition.

  • 2004 & 2006: Recognized early in his career at the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) awards.

The kutiyapi or kudyapi, is a Philippine two-stringed, fretted boat-lute. It is the only stringed instrument among the Maguindanao people, and one of several among other groups such as the Maranao and Manobo . The author, Lucy Urgello Miller has been collecting vintage Philippine postcards and photographs for over 20 years, the thrust of her collection being Cebu . Antipolo Pilgrimage is a month-long celebration that brings devotees and pilgrims to venerate the " Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage " which is enshrined in Antipolo Church in Antipolo City . This is annually celebrated every month of May.   It is during the month of May when Filipino devotees to the Blessed Virgin Mary from different parts of the country throng on the hills of Antipolo to make a pilgrimage at the shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buenviaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage).   The folk song “ Tayo na sa Antipolo ” vividly captures the festive air of this season in this rural town some decades ago. Gabriel Abellana comes from a family of artists. His father Dr. Ramon Alcoseba Abellana , is a sculptor, musician and a dentist. His uncle, Martino Abellana , is considered as one of the most influential artist in Cebu . He is a graduate of Fine Arts at the University of the Phillipines Cebu College .    As a lover of nature, Abellana is a plein air landscape artist and makes nature the subject of his art. He stated that nature is God's creation and painting it makes you closer to God; but never ceases to artistically evolve by experimenting in abstraction using nature as inspiration.
